Video still ‘Weaving in the Dark’
Part mobile kinetic sculpture and part audiovisual projection collage, the collaborative exhibition In the Dark III BEING THERE is a multi-sensory experiment by The London Group. The multimedia installation in the historic crypt of St John's Waterloo combines and fuses the diverse physical objects and digital visual/audio contributions by The London Group members into one overarching immersive work of art. A kaleidoscopic experience that not only intertwines the physical with the virtual, but also transcends the boundaries of the individual's artistic practice. It is the artistic equivalent of an eclectic superorganism, and will as such be live-streamed from the crypt via web-cams to make the exhibition available for distanced online visitors.
The theme 'Being There' has emerged from the forced separation of the last year, and the ability of The London Group members to only exhibit and meet in the virtual space. This exhibition thus celebrates a physical as well as virtual coming together of the Group. In the Dark III BEING THERE has a virtual prelude in the generative video 'Weaving in the Dark'. In keeping with the collaborative spirit of the exhibition it was launched in March 2021 as an online experience. Made entirely from visual and audio contributions by London Group artists the audiovisual work is visually woven together by Genetic Moo, LG with audio by Jockel Liess LG. The video is currently available to view online in The Gallery, The London Group website and will form a part of the installation in the crypt.

THE LONDON GROUP
The London Group was set up in 1913 by thirty two artists including Robert Bevan, Henri Gaudier Brzeska, Jacob Epstein, Duncan Grant, Wyndham Lewis, Lucien Pissarro and Walter Sickert, with the aim of creating a powerful artist-run group to act as a counter-balance to institutions such as the Royal Academy. The founding group created a unique structure for an organisation, that has gone on to successfully nurture the careers of many of Britain's best-known artists.
In the Dark III BEING THERE is dedicated to Susan Haire PLG and Frank Hinks for their generosity in hosting The London Group exhibitions in The Cello Factory over the years.
